When we started WT Max Africa, we kept hearing the same complaint from retailers and corporate buyers across South Africa.

“We either wait six weeks for stock from overseas, or we pay a premium for local products that fall apart in three months.”

That was the gap. And nobody was talking about it seriously enough to fix it.

Imported leather goods and PPE looked impressive in the catalogue. But by the time the shipment cleared customs, the client was gone. And the local alternatives were either inconsistently made, overpriced for what they delivered, or both.

So we made a decision that changed everything.

We set up our own factory in South Africa and started making it ourselves.

It Was Not Easy. It Was Worth It.

The early days tested everything we had.

Machines broke down. Leather batches came in below specification. There were late nights hand-finishing stitching on the production floor to make sure nothing left our facility unless it met our standard. In those early days, we made the difficult decision to turn away orders rather than ship products that were not right. 

Walking away from income when you are still building is one of the hardest things a business can do. But we knew that one bad product in a customer’s hands would cost us far more than one lost sale.

That moment taught us something that still drives every decision we make today.

Reputation is slower to build than revenue. But it lasts longer.

Their PPE supplier had missed a 200-unit delivery. They had a site inspection in four days. No product. No compliance documentation. No options.

We ran a three-days production cycle, delivered the full order with complete compliance documentation and they made their inspection.
