Maxmas Shumba -The WT Max Africa story from Humble beginnings to Africa's Luxury
FROM HUMBLE BEGINNINGS TO AFRICAN LUXURY
The Story of Maxmas Shumba, Founder of Wavetrackie Group Trading as WT Max Africa
A Journey of Vision, Resilience and African Craftsmanship
Every great business begins with a dream. Sometimes that dream starts in a boardroom. Sometimes it begins with nothing more than determination, a pair of hardworking hands and the courage to believe that tomorrow can be better than today.
For Maxmas Shumba, the founder of Wavetrackie Group, trading as WT Max Africa, the journey began in Zimbabwe on 9 June 1987.
Born to Jeremiah Shumba and Penina Farirwi, Maxmas grew up with values that would later become the foundation of his entrepreneurial journey — hard work, perseverance, self-belief and the importance of creating opportunities rather than waiting for them.
The Foundation of a Dream
Maxmas began his education at Ndawana Primary School, before continuing to Chawatama Secondary School. In 2005–2006, he proceeded to Mhari High School, where he pursued his Advanced Level studies.
But beyond the classroom, something else was developing within him.
Maxmas had developed a strong desire to become an entrepreneur.
While many young people were focused solely on finding employment, Maxmas began thinking differently. He became fascinated by the idea of buying and selling — understanding what people needed, finding ways to source those products and creating value through trade.
That entrepreneurial spirit became his first classroom in business.
The Entrepreneurial Journey
After completing his Advanced Level education, Maxmas began his entrepreneurial journey through buying and selling.
It was not an overnight success story.
Like many entrepreneurs, he had to learn through experience. Every transaction taught him something. Every challenge strengthened his determination. Every customer interaction helped him understand an important principle of business: success is built by understanding people, solving problems and consistently delivering value.
Those early experiences planted a seed that would eventually grow into something much bigger.
A New Chapter in South Africa
In 2014, Maxmas moved to South Africa in search of greener pastures and new opportunities.
Like many entrepreneurs who leave familiar surroundings in pursuit of a better future, he arrived with ambition but without knowing exactly where the journey would take him.
South Africa presented both challenges and opportunities.
Determined to create a livelihood for himself, Maxmas began making small leather products by hand.
What started as a way to earn a living gradually became something much more meaningful.
He discovered that leather was not simply a material.
It was an opportunity to create.
With patience, creativity and determination, he continued improving his craftsmanship. He experimented with designs, learned from mistakes and paid close attention to what customers wanted.
Then something important happened.
People began noticing his products.
Customers started showing interest. Demand increased. What had begun as a small personal venture was revealing the potential to become a serious business.
Maxmas realised that he had discovered more than a product — he had discovered a market.
From Small Leather Products to a Bigger Vision
The growing demand for his leather products inspired Maxmas to think beyond survival.
He began imagining a company that could showcase African craftsmanship, African creativity and African luxury to the world.
That vision became the foundation for WT Max Africa.
The idea was simple but ambitious:
Africa should not only supply raw materials to the world. Africa can create world-class luxury products and proudly put its own name on them.
WT Max Africa was therefore born from a combination of entrepreneurship, craftsmanship, determination and a desire to build something that could represent African excellence.
Crafting Elegance, One Stitch at a Time
Today, WT Max Africa is growing into an African fashion and manufacturing brand specialising in genuine leather products and luxury craftsmanship.
From genuine leather wallets and belts to handbags, laptop bags, backpacks, travel bags and other leather products, the company continues to develop products designed around quality, functionality and style.
Behind every product is a story.
A piece of leather is transformed through careful selection, cutting, preparation, stitching, finishing and branding. What appears to be a simple luxury item to a customer represents hours of craftsmanship and attention to detail.
This is why one of the ideas closely associated with the brand is:
“crafting elegance, one stitch at a time "
WT Max Africa is not simply trying to make leather products.
It is building a legacy of African craftsmanship.
More Than Fashion — Building an African Manufacturing Brand
The vision of WT Max Africa extends beyond fashion.
The company is also involved in the manufacturing and supply of PPE and safety wear, providing products designed to support workers, businesses and organisations.
This diversification reflects Maxmas Shumba's broader entrepreneurial philosophy: identify opportunities, understand market needs and build solutions that create value.
From leather fashion to protective workwear, WT Max Africa continues to evolve.
A Factory Built on a Dream
What makes Maxmas Shumba's story particularly inspiring is the transformation from making small leather products to developing a growing manufacturing vision.
The journey demonstrates that great businesses do not always begin with large factories, expensive machinery or substantial capital.
Sometimes, they begin with one person, one idea and the willingness to start small.
The small leather products Maxmas once crafted to make a living became the foundation for a much larger dream.
Today, that dream is evolving into a company with ambitions that reach far beyond the local market.
The Vision for the Future
WT Max Africa's ambition is bold: to become one of Africa's leading destinations for luxury leather and African fashion, while taking African craftsmanship to customers around the world.
The company aims to demonstrate that African-made products can compete through quality, design, craftsmanship and innovation.
For Maxmas Shumba, the journey is far from finished.
The entrepreneur who began his journey through buying and selling, and later started crafting small leather products in South Africa, is now building a brand with a much bigger purpose.
A brand that says:
Africa can create.
Africa can manufacture.
Africa can innovate.
Africa can build luxury brands.
And most importantly:
Africa can tell its own story through products made by African hands.
The Legacy in the Making
The story of Maxmas Shumba is ultimately a story about believing in possibility.
From his childhood education in Zimbabwe, to his first experiences in entrepreneurship, to his move to South Africa in 2014, and from crafting small leather products to establishing WT Max Africa, every chapter has contributed to the journey.
His story reminds aspiring entrepreneurs that success does not always arrive immediately.
Sometimes, the beginning looks very small compared with the dream.
But with consistency, courage, learning and an unwavering belief in the vision, small beginnings can become extraordinary journeys.
WT Max Africa continues to grow, evolve and reach for new horizons.
And as the brand looks towards the future, its message remains clear:
WT MAX AFRICA
Crafting Elegance. Celebrating Africa. Building a Legacy.
